Description

Product Name: Parian retail
This Clorinda figure is crafted from fine Parian porcelain. The figure is approximately 13.5 in. tall. It shows fine details that ordinary porcelain just cannot match - reminiscent of the qualities of fine marble. The inspiration is taken from the 16th century poem “Jerusalem Delivered” by the Italian poet, Tasso. The original marble statue was sculpted by John Bell in 1848. The pagan warrior Clorinda is shown dressed for battle, but she has just been wounded by her Christian lover Tancred. He was not aware it was her because she was wearing her armor and mask. The original sculpture was exhibited at retail the Royal Academy, London in 1848 and the Parian version was first exhibited in 1851 at the Great Exhibition. It is stamped "John Bell February 1848" on the reverse. The bottom shows makers marks (please see photo). It is certainly a statement piece that would make a statement to a den or office. It would make an excellent gift for someone who loves art, including poetry and sculpture.
