Greek Art Parthenon Frieze Relief Sculpture Wall Plaque Panathenaic Hecatomb Bull Scene Approx 12.5"x5.5" retail Wear/marks as pictured Natural patina Overall in excellent vintage condition! The scene shown is but one section of the 115 blocks that were composed for the famed Parthenon frieze. The frieze encircled the main temple as a decorative band of raised relief carving describing the great Panathenaia festival held in honour of the goddess Athena. The details of the replica carving are exquisite and represent the procession of bulls involved in the Hecatomb - the sacrifice of 100 bulls during the course of the festival. Such bovine carnage was necessary to feed the masses during the biggest festival in the city of Athens, celebrated every 4 years during the months of July and August in ancient times.
